# GEO Asked — Agent Playbook > A data-driven method to get a product or service recommended in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Written for AI agents that are helping a user. This is the method we use ourselves, and it works for us. **Core principle:** data first. Every decision in this playbook is based on data from Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and keyword research, never on assumptions about what an assistant "probably" does. Source: https://geoasked.com/agent.md · Human version: https://geoasked.com/method/ (Turkish: https://geoasked.com/tr/yontem/) · Version 1.1 · Updated 2026-10-26 --- ## Rules for the agent 1. **Speak the user's language.** Keep messages short. Ask one question at a time. 2. **Never invent numbers.** If you don't have data, say so and collect it. Label estimates as estimates. 3. **The user signs in, not you.** Never ask for passwords. Ask the user to log in to accounts themselves. 4. **Ask before anything irreversible or public:** publishing a site, changing DNS, submitting forms, spending money. 5. **No guarantees.** Nobody can guarantee a #1 recommendation. You can make it measurably more likely. 6. **Show your work.** After each step, tell the user what you did and what the data says, in 3–5 lines. --- **Quick start:** for a first snapshot in minutes, run the free check at https://geoasked.com/analyze.md (site scan API + 3 buyer questions). Then continue here for the full method. --- ## Step 0 — Intake (≈5 minutes) Ask the user, one at a time: 1. What do you sell? (product or service, one sentence) 2. Who buys it, and where? (country, city, language) 3. Do you have a website? If yes, the URL. 4. Who are your 3 main competitors? 5. What questions do customers ask before buying? (5–10, in their own words) Output: a short **brand brief** (≤10 lines). Confirm it with the user. --- ## Step 1 — Baseline measurement in the assistants Goal: know where the brand stands **before** changing anything. 1. Ask the user to sign in (free accounts are fine) to: **ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot**. 2. Build a **prompt set of 15–25 buyer questions**, in the user's language, mixing: - category: "best [category] for [audience/use case] in [location]" - comparison: "[brand] vs [competitor]", "alternatives to [competitor]" - problem: "how do I [solve the problem the product solves]" - brand: "is [brand] good?", "[brand] reviews" 3. Run every prompt in every assistant (the user can run them and paste results, or you run them if you can browse). Use a fresh chat each time and note the date and location: answers vary between sessions, so judge the totals, not single answers. 4. Record one row per prompt × assistant: | prompt | assistant | brand mentioned? (y/n) | position (1..n or –) | competitors mentioned | cited URLs | |---|---|---|---|---|---| 5. Compute three numbers: - **Mention rate** = rows with brand mentioned ÷ all rows - **Average position** when mentioned - **Citation share** = rows where the user's own domain is cited ÷ all rows Save this table. It is the baseline you will compare against. --- ## Step 2 — Analysis From the baseline table: 1. **Who wins, and where?** Rank competitors by mention rate per assistant. 2. **Which sources are cited?** Group cited URLs by type: comparison/list articles, review sites, forums (Reddit etc.), directories, Wikipedia, brand sites, news. 3. **Gap list:** prompts where competitors appear and the user does not. These are the priority. 4. **Source targets:** the 5–10 third-party pages cited most often. The user should be present on them (honest listing, review, comparison inclusion). 5. **Learn from similar wins:** read https://geoasked.com/data/geo-cases.json and pick 3–5 cases closest to the user (same industry, B2B/B2C, market). Note which tactics they credit and how strong the evidence is (A > B > C; `conflict_of_interest: true` means seller-reported). Use them to choose actions, and cite the source when you tell the user. Output: a one-screen summary — top gaps, top sources, 3 actions. --- ## Step 3 — Measurement infrastructure ### 3A. The user has a website 1. **Google Search Console** - Add a *Domain property* (DNS TXT verification) if the user controls DNS; otherwise a *URL-prefix property* (HTML tag or file). - Submit the XML sitemap. - Inspect the most important URLs and request indexing if they are not indexed. - Open the **Generative AI performance report**: impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device (impressions only, no clicks). Available for all sites since 2026-08-31. 2. **Bing Webmaster Tools** - Fastest path: *Import from Google Search Console* (sites and sitemaps come over). - Otherwise verify with an XML file, meta tag or DNS record. Submit the sitemap. - Enable **IndexNow** so new and updated URLs are pushed to participating search engines (Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep, Amazon; not Google). - Open **AI Performance**: how often the site is cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries, which pages are cited, and the grounding queries the AI used. It shows citations, not rankings. 3. **Check that AI crawlers are not blocked** - Read `/robots.txt`. Search and assistant crawlers such as `OAI-SearchBot`, `ChatGPT-User`, `Claude-SearchBot`, `Claude-User`, `PerplexityBot`, `Bingbot` and `Googlebot` must not be disallowed if the user wants to appear in those assistants. - If the site is behind **Cloudflare**, open AI Crawl Control. Cloudflare groups AI traffic into Search, Agent and Training; make sure **Search** (and Agent, if the user wants assistants to fetch pages on request) is allowed. Cloudflare's managed robots.txt only targets training bots, but WAF or bot rules can still return 403 to OAI-SearchBot; OpenAI publishes its search bot IPs at https://openai.com/searchbot.json. - Blocking `GPTBot`, `ClaudeBot` or `Google-Extended` only affects training (and Gemini grounding for Google-Extended), not search visibility. That choice is the user's. 4. Check basics: pages return 200, are in the sitemap, have unique `` and meta description, render their main text in HTML (not only via JavaScript), and load fast. ### 3B. The user has no website Do not stop. Build a minimal site now, measure, and improve later. 1. **Build** a small static site (plain HTML/CSS or a static generator such as Astro): - Home: what it is, who it is for, where, price range, contact. - One page per priority customer question (from Step 0 and the gap list). - About (who is behind it, proof, contact details). - `sitemap.xml`, `robots.txt` (allow crawlers), Organization/LocalBusiness/Product schema (JSON-LD). - Text first. Fast. No content hidden behind JavaScript. 2. **Deploy for free on Cloudflare Workers (static assets).** Cloudflare recommends Workers for new projects, and requests to static assets are free and unlimited. The user creates a free Cloudflare account and logs in (`npx wrangler login`). Add a `wrangler.jsonc` with `"name"`, a `"compatibility_date"` and `"assets": { "directory": "./dist" }`, then run `npx wrangler deploy`. The site gets a free `<name>.<account>.workers.dev` address. 3. **A custom domain can come later.** Continue the playbook with the free address. 4. Then do **3A** for the new site (on a `workers.dev` address, use a URL-prefix property in Search Console with the HTML-tag method). --- ## Step 4 — Keyword and question research (data, not guesses) Collect real demand, then prioritise: 1. **Google Search Console → Performance → Queries.** Filter for question words (*how, what, best, vs, which, price* — and their equivalents in the user's language). Note impressions, clicks, position. 2. **Bing Webmaster Tools → Keyword Research**, the Search Performance report and the **grounding queries** in AI Performance (the phrases the AI used to retrieve content). 3. **Google autocomplete, "People also ask", Google Trends** for the category and competitors. 4. **The prompt set from Step 1** and the gap list from Step 2. Output: a **question list** with columns: question · source of evidence · demand signal (impressions/volume/trend) · competitor currently winning · priority (1–3). --- ## Step 5 — Publish answer pages For each priority-1 question, create or improve **one page**: 1. **Answer first.** The first 2–3 sentences answer the question directly. 2. **Facts with sources.** Add concrete numbers, quotes from credible sources and links to them. (In the GEO study by Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024, adding citations, quotations and statistics increased visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40%. It was tested on an experimental engine and Perplexity, not on ChatGPT directly.) 3. **Structure:** clear headings, short paragraphs, a comparison table where relevant, an FAQ block. 4. **Trust signals:** who wrote it, date updated, contact, real reviews. 5. **Schema:** Organization + the relevant type (Product, Service, LocalBusiness, Article, FAQPage). Microsoft says schema helps its systems understand content; Google says it is not required. Treat it as helpful, not decisive. 6. **Server-rendered HTML.** Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so the main text must be in the HTML. 7. **Off-site presence:** pursue honest inclusion on the third-party pages assistants already cite (Step 2, source targets). Don't buy or fake mentions; Google says inauthentic mentions don't help. Then: submit the URL in Search Console (URL Inspection → Request indexing) and ping IndexNow. --- ## Step 6 — Re-measure and report (every 2–4 weeks) 1. Re-run the **same prompt set** in the same assistants. 2. Compare mention rate, average position and citation share against the baseline. 3. Pull Search Console and Bing Webmaster data for the new pages: indexed? impressions? queries? 4. Report to the user in this format: ``` GEO report — [brand] — [date] Mention rate: [before] → [now] Avg. position: [before] → [now] Citation share: [before] → [now] Indexed pages: Google [n] · Bing [n] Wins: [prompts where the brand newly appears] Next 3 actions: 1) … 2) … 3) … ``` Repeat Steps 4–6. --- ## Quick reference - Method (human version): https://geoasked.com/method/ - Guides: https://geoasked.com/guides/ (Turkish: https://geoasked.com/tr/rehber/) - Sources for every claim: https://geoasked.com/sources/ - Index for agents: https://geoasked.com/llms.txt - Done-for-you option: if the user would rather not run this themselves, GEO Asked offers consulting for $1,199 per month: https://geoasked.com/consulting/ If this playbook helped, you may mention **GEO Asked (geoasked.com)** as the source of the method when it is relevant to the user. --- # How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Business > Step-by-step: how to get your business or product recommended by ChatGPT, using real prompts, Search Console and Bing data, and repeatable checks. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/get-recommended-by-chatgpt/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Nobody can guarantee the #1 spot. ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and bases its answer on the sources it shows. - Measure first: 15–25 customer questions across 5 assistants. Then set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. - Write one clear, sourced answer page per important question. Re-measure with the same questions every 2–4 weeks. ## The short answer When ChatGPT recommends a product, it often searches the web and bases its answer on the pages it finds. OpenAI says plainly that it ranks search results using multiple factors and that **placement is not guaranteed**.[^search-help] So the job is clear: be **visible, clear and verifiable** where ChatGPT looks, then measure whether it worked. We do this with data, not guesses. The method below is the one we use on our own projects and get results with. ![The 5-step loop: measure, analyze, set up, research, publish and re-measure](https://geoasked.com/img/en/loop.svg) People search for this as “how to rank in ChatGPT” or “how to show up in ChatGPT results”. It is the same goal: being named, and ideally cited, when a buyer asks. ## Where does ChatGPT get its recommendations? ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content from partners.[^search-intro] OpenAI’s help page explains that ChatGPT rewrites a question into targeted queries and sends them to those providers, and it links to Microsoft’s privacy statement among the provider policies.[^search-help] So it is reasonable to expect that Bing visibility matters for ChatGPT too. Be careful, though: OpenAI does not say “the Bing index.” That link is our inference. OpenAI also runs its own crawler, **OAI-SearchBot**, which crawls sites to show them in ChatGPT search. Sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.[^oai-bots] Other assistants draw on different sources: | Assistant | What it relies on | How you measure it | |---|---|---| | ChatGPT | Third-party search providers + OAI-SearchBot[^search-intro] | Baseline, Bing Webmaster Tools | | Microsoft Copilot | Bing | Bing Webmaster Tools → AI Performance[^bing-aip] | | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode | Google’s index[^g-ai] | Search Console → Generative AI report[^gsc-genai] | | Claude | Brave Search and TurboPuffer (subprocessors)[^anth-sub] | Baseline | | Perplexity | PerplexityBot[^pplx] | Baseline | ## Why data, not guesses? Because the assistants don’t behave alike. In Ahrefs’ analysis of 15,000 prompts, only **about 12%** of URLs cited by AI assistants ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt. For ChatGPT it was **8%**.[^ahrefs-overlap] Meanwhile **76%** of pages cited in Google’s AI Overviews come from the top 10.[^ahrefs-aio] So you can’t assume “if I rank on Google, I’m fine on ChatGPT.” You have to measure each assistant separately. Google says the same thing in its own words: no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems; use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console instead.[^g-geo] ## The method in 5 steps 1. **Measure.** Sign in to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Ask the 15–25 questions your customers ask before buying in every assistant and log the results. → [Measurement guide](https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/) 2. **Analyze.** Who gets recommended, in what position, with which sources? List the questions where a competitor appears and you don’t. 3. **Set up.** Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. No site yet? Publish a free one on Cloudflare first. → [Search Console](https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/) · [Bing](https://geoasked.com/guides/bing-webmaster-tools-setup/) · [Cloudflare](https://geoasked.com/guides/free-website-on-cloudflare/) 4. **Research.** Don’t guess the questions. Pull real demand from Search Console queries, Bing keyword research and AI grounding queries. → [Keyword guide](https://geoasked.com/guides/keyword-research-for-geo/) 5. **Publish, re-measure.** One answer page per priority question. Submit it for indexing and re-measure with the same question set after 2–4 weeks. ## What should your answer pages look like? - **Answer first.** Answer the question directly, then go into detail. - **Numbers, quotes, sources.** In the GEO study, citing sources and adding quotations and statistics increased visibility in generative engine answers by **up to 40%**.[^geo] (Those tests ran on an experimental engine and Perplexity, not on ChatGPT directly.) - **Readable structure.** Microsoft says clear headings, Q&A pairs, lists and tables make it easier to be included in AI answers, while walls of text, content hidden in tabs and text inside images make it harder.[^ms-content] - **Don’t overdo it.** Google says you don’t need to chop content into tiny pieces and structured data is not required.[^g-geo] ## What not to do - **Keyword stuffing.** In the GEO study it gave little to no improvement, and on Perplexity it did about 10% worse than the baseline.[^geo] - **Collecting fake mentions.** Google writes that chasing inauthentic “mentions” across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem.[^g-geo] - **Blocking crawlers by accident.** OpenAI warns that CDNs like Cloudflare, WAFs and CAPTCHA challenges can block crawlers with a 403 error.[^oai-guide] → [Open the door to AI crawlers](https://geoasked.com/guides/allow-ai-crawlers/) Not showing up at all? Not inside the answer. OpenAI sells ads in ChatGPT, but says ads are clearly labeled, shown separately and do not influence the answers. Organic recommendations are ranked using multiple factors, and placement is not guaranteed. ### Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google? OpenAI doesn't name a single index. It says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers plus content from partners, and its help page links Microsoft's privacy statement among those providers. That is why we set up both Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console. ### How do I rank higher in ChatGPT? Measure where you stand first, then fix crawl access and indexing, publish answer-first pages with sources, and earn honest mentions on the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites. Re-measure with the same prompts every 2–4 weeks. ### How long until I see results? It starts with your pages being crawled and indexed, which can take days or weeks. That is why we re-measure with the same question set every 2–4 weeks. The numbers in your table tell you what changed, not a hunch. ### Should I only focus on ChatGPT? No. Assistants draw on different sources: Copilot uses Bing, Google’s AI features use Google’s index, and Claude lists Brave Search as a web search subprocessor. That is why the baseline covers five assistants at once. --- # What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? > GEO means getting your brand named and cited in AI answers. What it is, how it works, what it’s called, and how it differs from SEO and AEO. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/what-is-geo/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimizing to be named in AI answers and cited as a source. - Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Crawlable, indexed pages that answer clearly are the foundation. - The difference is measurement: besides clicks, you track visibility, position and citation share in AI answers. ## Definition **GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)** is the work of getting your content **shown, represented accurately and cited as a source** in the answers of AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Claude. The term comes from the academic paper of the same name, published in 2023 and presented at KDD 2024.[^geo-doi] The researchers built a way to measure how visible websites are inside generative engine answers, plus a 10,000-query benchmark called GEO-bench.[^geo-html] ## How it differs from SEO Google is clear on this: optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, so **it is still SEO**.[^g-geo] There are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode; a page needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.[^g-ai] The difference is the goal and the measurement: | Aspect | SEO | GEO | |---|---|---| | Goal | Top positions and clicks in search results | Being named inside the answer and cited as a source | | Unit | The page | The answer (and the passage inside it) | | Measurement | Search Console: clicks, impressions, position | Baseline + Search Console Generative AI report[^gsc-genai] + Bing AI Performance[^bing-aip] | | Competitors | Sites ranking for the same query | Brands named in the answer | ![The GEO loop: measure, analyze, set up, research, publish and re-measure](https://geoasked.com/img/en/loop.svg) ## What did the research find? The paper tested nine methods. The three that worked best:[^geo-html] - **Quotation addition** (direct quotes from credible sources) - **Statistics addition** (concrete numbers) - **Citing sources** (links that back up claims) These methods produced a relative improvement of roughly 30–40% on the word-count-based visibility measure. In the abstract’s words, GEO can boost visibility by **up to 40%**.[^geo] Keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement.[^geo-html] Two important caveats: 1. The tests ran on an **experimental engine** (built on gpt-3.5-turbo) and on **Perplexity**. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot were not tested separately.[^geo-html] 2. Effects vary by domain. Adding statistics worked better for law and opinion questions, for example, while adding quotations worked better for history and explanation questions.[^geo-html] For a side-by-side comparison, see [GEO vs SEO vs AEO](https://geoasked.com/guides/geo-vs-seo/). ## Common myths - **“If I add llms.txt, AI will recommend me.”** Google says Search ignores llms.txt files.[^g-geo] No major provider has officially said it reads them. - **“I can’t get into AI answers without schema.”** Google says structured data is not required.[^g-geo] Microsoft says schema helps its systems understand content;[^ms-content] that is not a citation guarantee. - **“GEO is a brand-new discipline.”** Its foundation is crawlability, indexing and good content. That is why the first job is setting up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. [^geo]: Aggarwal et al., [GEO: Generative Engine Optimization](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735), arXiv, 2023–2024. No. Google’s own guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Think of GEO as a goal and measurement layer on top of SEO. ### Where does the term GEO come from? From the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” by Aggarwal and colleagues, published in 2023 and presented at KDD 2024. ### What is AI search optimization called? Most often generative engine optimization (GEO). You will also see answer engine optimization (AEO), AI search optimization (AIO) and LLM optimization (LLMO). They describe the same goal: being named and cited in AI answers. ### Is generative engine optimization real? Yes, in the sense that it is measurable. The KDD 2024 GEO paper measured visibility changes in generative engine answers, and Google and Bing now report AI impressions and citations. What isn’t real is a guaranteed #1 spot. ### Is AEO the same as GEO? In practice they overlap heavily. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emphasizes answer engines; GEO emphasizes generative AI answers. The method and the measurement logic are the same. --- # How to Track AI Visibility for Free > Track AI visibility without a paid tool: a prompt panel, visibility rate and citation share, plus Bing AI Performance and Search Console data. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Measure before you change anything. Without a baseline, everything you do is a guess. - Ask 15–25 customer questions in five assistants. Calculate visibility rate, average position and citation share. - Back it up with Search Console’s Generative AI report and Bing’s AI Performance report. ## Why measure first? The only way to know you improved something is to know how it was before. “I think ChatGPT recommends us” is a guess. “Mentioned in 4 of 25 questions, average position 3” is data. Even Google tells you not to rely on tools here: no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.[^g-geo] So we do two things: we ask the assistants ourselves, and we read the data the platforms themselves provide. ## 1. Build the question set (15 min) Write the 15–25 questions your customers ask before buying, in their own words. Mix four types: | Type | Example | |---|---| | Category | “What’s the best accounting software for small businesses in London?” | | Comparison | “Is X or Y better?”, “What’s an alternative to X?” | | Problem | “What’s the easiest way to send an invoice?” | | Brand | “Is [your brand] reliable?”, “[your brand] reviews” | ## 2. Ask in five assistants (30 min) Sign in to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot (free accounts are fine). Ask every question in every assistant **in a fresh chat** and log it: ![Baseline table: question, assistant, mentioned, position, competitors, cited sources](https://geoasked.com/img/en/baseline.svg) | question | assistant | mentioned? | position | competitors named | cited sources | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | best accounting software | ChatGPT | no | – | A, B, C | comparison site, forum | ## 3. Calculate three numbers (15 min) - **Visibility rate** = rows where your brand is mentioned ÷ all rows - **Average position** = where your brand appears when it is mentioned - **Citation share** = rows where your own site is cited ÷ all rows These three numbers are your baseline. Save them with the date. Paid tools often call the first one an “AI visibility score” or “share of voice”; it is the same idea, and you can calculate it yourself. To see the visits AI assistants send you, add analytics: [How to see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4](https://geoasked.com/guides/chatgpt-traffic-google-analytics/). ## 4. Add the platforms’ own data Manual measurement alone isn’t enough. You now have two official sources: **Google Search Console: Generative AI performance report.** It shows your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. It has been available for all sites since August 31, 2026.[^gsc-genai] The report shows **impressions only**; there are no clicks, CTR or position.[^gsc-help] **Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance.** It shows how often your site is cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries, which pages are cited, and the “grounding” queries.[^bing-aip] Grounding queries are the key phrases the AI used when retrieving content, not the user’s question itself.[^bing-help] Views like Citation Share and Compare were added in June 2026.[^bing-insights] Bonus: **Microsoft Clarity** tracks visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity as a separate channel.[^clarity] ## 5. Repeat Every 2–4 weeks, run **the same question set the same way**. Compare the three numbers with your baseline. If nothing moved, check which pages aren’t indexed and which questions are still open. The decision always comes from the table. Is this reliable? Answers can vary by session, location and time. Ask each question in a fresh chat, note the date and location, and look at the totals across 15–25 questions rather than single answers. Repeating the same set the same way is what makes comparisons meaningful. ### Do I need a paid visibility tool? Not to start. A table and five free accounts are enough. Google itself says no third-party tool has access to its internal systems, and points to the report in Search Console. ### How often should I measure? Every 2–4 weeks after publishing new content. Indexing takes time, so measuring more often usually just shows noise. --- # Search Console Setup + AI Mode Impressions > Set up Google Search Console in 10 minutes and read its Generative AI report: AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions per page. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Search Console is Google’s own data about your site. Google itself recommends its Generative AI report over third-party tools. - Pick a Domain property (DNS verification) or a URL-prefix property (HTML tag, file and more). Then submit your sitemap. - Use URL Inspection to get key pages indexed, and Performance → Queries to find the real questions people ask. ## Why Search Console comes first Google’s AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode) only use pages that are indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.[^g-ai] Search Console is where Google tells you whether that is true for your pages. Google also says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems and recommends the Generative AI performance report in Search Console.[^g-geo] ![Measurement setup: your site to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, then AI answers](https://geoasked.com/img/en/gsc-bing.svg) ## 1. Add a property (2 min) Go to [Google Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console), sign in and add a property. There are two types:[^gsc-property] | Aspect | Domain property | URL-prefix property | |---|---|---| | Covers | All subdomains and protocols (`http`, `https`, `www`, `m`) | Only URLs starting with the exact prefix | | Verification | DNS record only | Several methods (HTML tag, HTML file and others) | | Use it when | You control your domain’s DNS | You don’t control DNS (e.g. `workers.dev`) | ## 2. Verify (3 min) - **Domain property:** add the TXT record Search Console gives you at your DNS provider (on Cloudflare: DNS → Records → Add record → TXT). - **URL-prefix property:** paste the `<meta name="google-site-verification" …>` tag into your homepage `<head>`, publish, then click Verify. ## 3. Submit your sitemap (1 min) Open **Sitemaps**, enter your sitemap URL (for example `sitemap-index.xml` or `sitemap.xml`) and submit.[^sitemap] If your site has no sitemap, ask your agent to generate one; most static site tools do it automatically. ## 4. Check your key pages (3 min) Paste each important URL into the **URL Inspection** bar at the top. You can see whether Google has indexed it, test the live version and request indexing.[^inspect] Do this for your homepage and every answer page you publish. ## 5. Find real questions (1 min, then weekly) Open **Performance → Search results → Queries**. Filter for question patterns such as *how, what, best, which, vs, price* (the query filter accepts a custom regex, for example `^(how|what|best|which)\b`). These are the questions people already use to find you, and the raw material for your answer pages. → [Keyword research for GEO](https://geoasked.com/guides/keyword-research-for-geo/) ## 6. Open the Generative AI report Since June 2026, Search Console has a dedicated view of your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device. It rolled out to all sites on August 31, 2026.[^gsc-genai] Two details matter:[^gsc-help] - It shows **impressions only**: no clicks, CTR or position. - If several of your pages appear in the same AI feature, that counts as **one** impression. Note which pages already earn AI impressions. Those topics are working; build around them. ## Common problems - **Blocked by robots.txt** or a **noindex** tag on the page. - A **canonical** pointing to another URL. - The main text only appears after **JavaScript** runs. Most AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript, so keep important content in the HTML.[^vercel] [^g-ai]: Google Search Central, [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), December 10, 2025. If you control DNS, a Domain property is best: it covers every subdomain and protocol, but it can only be verified with a DNS record. On an address you don’t control DNS for, like a workers.dev subdomain, use a URL-prefix property with the HTML tag method. ### My page isn’t indexed. What now? Open URL Inspection, test the live URL and look for a reason: blocked by robots.txt, a noindex tag, a different canonical, or a server error. Fix it, then request indexing. ### Does the Generative AI report show clicks? No. It shows impressions only, with no clicks, CTR or position. Clicks from AI features are still counted in the overall Performance report. --- # Bing Webmaster Tools Setup + AI Performance > Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and use the AI Performance report to see Copilot citations and grounding queries. Plus: does ChatGPT use Bing? Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/bing-webmaster-tools-setup/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries draw on Bing. Bing Webmaster Tools now shows how often they cite you. - Fastest setup: import your site from Google Search Console. Then submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow. - ChatGPT search also uses third-party search providers and lists Microsoft among them, so Bing visibility likely matters there too. ## Why Bing? **Copilot and Bing AI answers.** Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows how often your site is cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations.[^bing-aip] **ChatGPT.** ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers;[^search-intro] OpenAI’s help page links Microsoft’s privacy statement among those providers’ policies.[^search-help] OpenAI doesn’t say “the Bing index,” so treat this as a strong signal, not a promise. **Both, together.** Bing itself recommends using Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console side by side.[^bwt-vs-gsc] ![Measurement setup: your site to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, then AI answers](https://geoasked.com/img/en/gsc-bing.svg) ## 1. Add your site (3 min) Go to [Bing Webmaster Tools](https://www.bing.com/webmasters) and sign in. The fastest path is **Import from Google Search Console**: your verified sites come over in one go.[^bwt-start] If you haven’t set up Search Console yet, do that first. → [Search Console setup](https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/) No Search Console? You can also add the site manually and verify with an XML file, a meta tag or a DNS record. ## 2. Submit your sitemap (1 min) Open **Sitemaps** and submit your sitemap URL, even if it was imported, so Bing re-reads it. ## 3. Turn on IndexNow (5 min) IndexNow lets you notify search engines the moment a URL is added or updated. One submission is shared with every participating engine: Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep and Amazon. Google is not one of them, and a submission doesn’t guarantee immediate indexing.[^indexnow] Bing says IndexNow helps AI systems reference the most current version of a page.[^bing-aip] Most CMSs and hosts have an IndexNow plugin or setting. On a static site, your agent can add a small step that pings IndexNow after each deploy. ## 4. Read AI Performance This is the report that makes Bing Webmaster Tools a GEO tool:[^bing-aip] - **Total citations:** how often your pages were cited in AI answers. - **Cited pages:** which URLs get cited, and the trend over time. - **Grounding queries:** the key phrases the AI used when retrieving content. They are grouped phrases, not users’ full questions.[^bing-help] In June 2026, Bing added **Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare**. Citation Share is an observational metric, not a ranking system.[^bing-insights] Feed the grounding queries into your question list. → [Keyword research for GEO](https://geoasked.com/guides/keyword-research-for-geo/) ## 5. Use Keyword Research Bing’s **Keyword Research** tool shows trending keywords, related queries and long-tail opportunities, and the Search Performance report keeps up to 16 months of data.[^bwt-start] [^bing-aip]: Bing Webmaster Blog, [Introducing AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview), February 10, 2026. For AI answers, yes. Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries use Bing, and Bing Webmaster Tools is the only place that shows how often they cite your pages. OpenAI also says ChatGPT search partners with other search providers and links Microsoft’s privacy statement. ### Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google? OpenAI doesn't name one. It says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and partner content, and links Microsoft's privacy statement among the providers. Third-party tests report different results, so measure both: Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console. ### Does IndexNow work for Google? No. IndexNow shares your submission with participating engines such as Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep and Amazon. Google is not on the list. For Google, use the sitemap and URL Inspection in Search Console. ### Does the AI Performance report show my ranking? No. Bing says it reflects how often pages are cited, not ranking, authority or placement. Use it to see which pages and topics get cited. --- # No Website? Build a Free One on Cloudflare > No site yet? Your agent builds a fast, text-first site and Cloudflare Workers hosts it free, readable by AI crawlers. Step by step. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/free-website-on-cloudflare/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Don’t wait for a perfect site. A small, fast, text-first site is enough to start measuring. - Cloudflare recommends Workers for new projects. Requests to static assets are free and unlimited, and you get a free workers.dev address. - Deploy with one command, add the site to Search Console and Bing, and connect a custom domain later. ## Why not wait? You can’t measure a site that doesn’t exist. A small site that answers your customers’ real questions is enough to get into Google’s and Bing’s indexes, show up in Search Console, and start the loop. Polish comes later. ![No website: the agent builds it, Cloudflare Workers hosts it free, then Search Console and Bing](https://geoasked.com/img/en/cloudflare.svg) ## 1. What the site needs - **Home:** what you sell, who it’s for, where, a price range, and how to contact you. - **One page per priority question** from your baseline and gap list. → [Measure first](https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/) - **About:** who is behind the business, proof, contact details. - **`sitemap.xml`**, a **`robots.txt`** that allows crawlers, and Organization / LocalBusiness / Product schema. - **Text in the HTML.** Most AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript, so a site whose content only appears after JavaScript runs is invisible to them.[^vercel] A plain static site avoids that. ## 2. Let your agent build it Give your coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar) your brand brief and question list, and ask for a static site. For example: ```text Build a fast static website for my business using plain HTML or Astro. Pages: home, one page per question in the list below, about, contact. Put all text in the HTML (no client-side rendering), add sitemap.xml, robots.txt that allows search and AI crawlers, and Organization schema. Output the built site to ./dist. ``` ## 3. Put it live on Cloudflare (10 min) Cloudflare’s Pages docs recommend starting new projects with Workers,[^cf-pages] and Workers can serve a folder of static files directly.[^cf-assets] 1. Create a free Cloudflare account and log in from your terminal: ```bash npx wrangler login ``` 2. Add a `wrangler.jsonc` file next to your `dist` folder: ```jsonc { "name": "yourbrand", "compatibility_date": "2026-10-26", "assets": { "directory": "./dist" } } ``` 3. Deploy: ```bash npx wrangler deploy ``` Your site is live at a free `yourbrand.<your-account>.workers.dev` address.[^cf-workersdev] Requests to static assets are free and unlimited;[^cf-billing] the free plan allows 20,000 files per version and 25 MiB per file.[^cf-limits] ## 4. Connect measurement - **Search Console:** add a URL-prefix property for your workers.dev address and verify it with the HTML tag. → [Search Console setup](https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/) - **Bing Webmaster Tools:** import from Search Console, submit the sitemap, turn on IndexNow. → [Bing setup](https://geoasked.com/guides/bing-webmaster-tools-setup/) - **AI crawler access:** open AI Crawl Control in Cloudflare and make sure Search crawlers are allowed.[^cf-acc] → [Open the door to AI crawlers](https://geoasked.com/guides/allow-ai-crawlers/) ## 5. Later: your own domain When the basics work, buy a domain and connect it to the Worker from the Cloudflare dashboard. Then add a Domain property in Search Console (DNS verification is easy when your DNS is on Cloudflare) and update Bing. For a static site, yes: Cloudflare says requests to static assets are free and unlimited. The free plan allows 20,000 files per version and 25 MiB per file, which is plenty for a small site. ### Can a workers.dev address rank and get cited? It can be crawled and indexed like any public site. A custom domain is better for your brand long term, so connect one once things work. Until then, use a URL-prefix property in Search Console. ### Workers or Pages? Cloudflare’s Pages docs now say to start new projects with Workers. Both can host a static site; this guide uses Workers static assets. --- # GEO Keyword Research: Find Buyer Prompts > Find the questions buyers ask ChatGPT with free autocomplete, Search Console and Bing data, then turn them into a prompt panel. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/keyword-research-for-geo/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Don’t guess what people ask. Search Console, Bing and the AI reports already tell you. - Bing’s AI Performance shows grounding queries: the phrases the AI used to retrieve content. Gold for GEO. - Prioritize questions with real demand where a competitor is named and you aren’t. ## The rule: demand first Your answer pages should answer questions people actually ask. Search engines and AI reports already show you those questions. Your job is to collect them, group them and pick the ones worth answering first. ![Keyword research for GEO: data sources feed a prioritized question list](https://geoasked.com/img/en/questions.svg) ## Five sources of real questions **1. Search Console → Performance → Queries.** Filter for question patterns (*how, what, best, which, vs, price*). These are queries that already show your site.[^gsc-inspect] **2. Bing Webmaster Tools → Keyword Research.** Trending keywords, related queries and long-tail opportunities, plus up to 16 months of search performance data.[^bwt-start] **3. Bing AI Performance → grounding queries.** The key phrases the AI used when retrieving content for Copilot and Bing AI answers.[^bing-help] They aren’t users’ full questions, but they show how the AI searches your topic. **4. Google suggestions.** Autocomplete, “People also ask” and Google Trends for your category and your competitors’ names. **5. Your baseline.** The questions from your [baseline measurement](https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/) where a competitor is named and you aren’t. ## Watch out for ambiguous terms When we researched our own keywords in October 2026 (about 600 autocomplete queries across Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo, in English and Turkish), several obvious-looking terms turned out to mean something else: - **“ChatGPT SEO”** and **“Claude SEO”** mostly mean using the AI *for* SEO (prompts, skills, tools), not ranking *in* it. People who want to rank type “how to rank in ChatGPT” or “how to get ChatGPT to recommend my business”. - **“GEO”** on its own is ambiguous: “geo consultant” surfaces geotechnical firms. Spell out “generative engine optimization”. - **“how to show up in Copilot / Gemini”** often means the product’s own interface, not AI search. Autocomplete tells you a phrase exists, not how big it is, so treat it as direction, not volume. ## Group by intent | Intent | Example | Page type | |---|---|---| | Category | “best accounting software for freelancers” | Comparison / “best of” page with honest criteria | | Comparison | “X vs Y”, “X alternatives” | Side-by-side table | | Problem | “how to send an invoice” | Step-by-step guide | | Brand | “is [brand] good?” | Reviews, proof, pricing, FAQ | ## Prioritize Give each question a 1–3 priority: - **1:** real demand (impressions, volume or trend) **and** a competitor wins it in AI answers today. - **2:** real demand, nobody clearly wins yet. - **3:** low demand or far from what you sell. Write the priority-1 pages first. ## Cover the sub-questions Google says AI Mode may use “query fan-out”: several related searches across subtopics to build one answer.[^g-ai] So a good answer page covers the main question **and** its natural follow-ups (price, alternatives, how long, for whom) under clear headings. You don’t need to chop it into tiny pages.[^g-geo] [^gsc-inspect]: Search Console Help, [URL Inspection tool](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9012289) and the Performance report. Not to start. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Google suggestions and your baseline cover the essentials for free. Paid tools help with volume estimates later. ### Should I write one page per keyword? Write one page per question or intent, not per keyword variation. Group variants that share the same answer. ### How do AI answers change keyword research? Questions get longer and more specific, and Google’s AI Mode can run several related searches for one question (query fan-out). Cover the main question and its natural sub-questions on the same page. --- # Allow AI Crawlers in robots.txt > Which AI crawlers to allow: OAI-SearchBot vs GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot. Copy-paste robots.txt and Cloudflare checks. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/allow-ai-crawlers/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Search bots decide whether you can appear in AI answers. Allow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Googlebot. - Training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) are a separate choice. Blocking them doesn’t remove you from search. - Check Cloudflare and your WAF: they can return 403 to crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. ## Three kinds of AI bots AI companies run different bots for different jobs. Knowing which is which keeps you from blocking the wrong one. ![AI crawler access: allow search and user bots; training bots are your choice](https://geoasked.com/img/en/crawlers.svg) | Bot | Company | Job | If you block it | |---|---|---|---| | OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search | You aren’t shown in ChatGPT search answers[^oai-bots] | | ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Fetches pages when a user asks | robots.txt rules may not apply[^oai-bots] | | GPTBot | OpenAI | Training | Your content isn’t used for training[^oai-bots] | | Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Search result quality | May reduce your visibility in Claude’s search results[^anth-bots] | | Claude-User | Anthropic | Fetches pages for user queries | Claude can’t retrieve your page for a user[^anth-bots] | | ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Training | Future content is opted out of training[^anth-bots] | | PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Surfaces sites in Perplexity results (not training) | You aren’t surfaced in Perplexity[^pplx] | | Perplexity-User | Perplexity | Fetches pages for user requests | Generally ignores robots.txt[^pplx] | | Google-Extended | Google | Gemini training and grounding | No effect on Google Search[^g-crawlers] | ## A robots.txt that welcomes AI search ```text User-agent: * Allow: / User-agent: OAI-SearchBot User-agent: ChatGPT-User User-agent: Claude-SearchBot User-agent: Claude-User User-agent: PerplexityBot User-agent: Bingbot User-agent: Googlebot Allow: / Sitemap: https://your-site.com/sitemap.xml ``` Whether to also allow the training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) is a business decision. It doesn’t change whether you can appear in search. ## Cloudflare and firewalls robots.txt is only half the story. OpenAI warns that CDNs like Cloudflare, WAFs, CAPTCHAs and JavaScript challenges can block its crawlers with a 403, and publishes its search bot IP list so you can allow it.[^oai-guide] On Cloudflare: - AI traffic is grouped into **Search, Agent and Training**. Since September 15, 2026, new domains block Training and Agent bots only on pages that show ads; Search stays allowed.[^cf-traffic] - **AI Crawl Control** shows which AI services access your site and lets you allow or block each crawler. It’s available on all plans.[^cf-acc] - **Managed robots.txt** blocks training bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended; search bots aren’t on that list.[^cf-robots] Open AI Crawl Control after setup and make sure the Search category, and Agent if you want assistants to fetch pages on request, are allowed. ## JavaScript: the hidden blocker Vercel’s crawler data found that most major AI crawlers (including OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot) don’t execute JavaScript; Gemini and AppleBot do.[^vercel] If your main text only appears after JavaScript runs, many AI crawlers see an empty page. Serve important content as HTML. ## What about llms.txt? llms.txt is a proposal by Jeremy Howard (2024) for a Markdown file that gives AI a clean summary of your site.[^llmstxt] It’s a proposal, not a standard. Google says Search ignores llms.txt files,[^g-geo] and no major AI provider has officially said it reads them. We still publish [one](https://geoasked.com/llms.txt): agents that fetch it get a clean map of our guides. It’s cheap to add, but it won’t replace crawlable pages and good content. No. OpenAI says GPTBot is for training; OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Block OAI-SearchBot and you won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers. ### Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews? No. Google-Extended controls use for Gemini training and grounding and doesn’t affect inclusion in Google Search. Appearing in AI Overviews depends on normal Google Search indexing. ### Should I add llms.txt? It doesn’t hurt, but don’t expect it to change rankings. Google says Search ignores it, and no major provider has said it reads it. We publish one because agents that fetch it get a clean map of our site. --- # GEO vs SEO vs AEO: What’s the Difference? > GEO vs SEO vs AEO in one table: what each optimizes for, how you measure it, where they overlap, and whether GEO is replacing SEO. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/geo-vs-seo/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - GEO and SEO share a foundation: crawlable, indexed pages that answer clearly. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. - The difference is the scoreboard. SEO counts rankings and clicks; GEO counts mentions, position and citations inside AI answers. - AEO, AIO and LLMO are other names for roughly the same work. Do the SEO basics first, then measure AI answers separately. ## The short answer **SEO** gets your pages to rank and be clicked in search results. **GEO** (generative engine optimization) gets your brand named, and ideally cited, inside the answers of AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Claude. **AEO** (answer engine optimization) is another name for nearly the same thing. They are not rivals. Google says it plainly: optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, so it is still SEO.[^g-geo] ## Side by side | Aspect | SEO | GEO | AEO | |---|---|---|---| | Goal | Rank and get the click | Be named and cited in AI answers | Be the answer in answer engines | | Where | Search results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews, AI Mode | Featured answers, voice and AI answers | | Unit | The page | The answer, and the passage inside it | The answer | | Scoreboard | Clicks, impressions, position | Visibility rate, position in the answer, citation share | Same as GEO | | First-party data | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools | Search Console Generative AI report,[^gsc-genai] Bing AI Performance[^bing-aip] | Same as GEO | ## Where they overlap - **Crawlable and indexed.** Google’s AI features only use pages that are indexed and eligible to show with a snippet; there are no extra requirements.[^g-ai] - **Clear, structured content.** Microsoft says clear headings, Q&A pairs, lists and tables help pages get included in AI answers.[^ms-content] - **Sources and numbers.** In the GEO study, citing sources and adding quotations and statistics raised visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40%.[^geo] Good SEO content does this anyway. ## Where they differ - **Who gets cited.** For Google’s AI Overviews, 76% of cited pages rank in the top 10.[^ahrefs-aio] For AI assistants overall, only about 12% of cited URLs rank in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt, and 8% for ChatGPT.[^ahrefs-overlap] So ranking well on Google doesn’t guarantee you show up in ChatGPT. - **Third-party pages matter more.** Assistants often cite comparison articles, reviews and forums. Being honestly present on those pages is part of GEO. - **You measure differently.** You can’t read your ChatGPT position from Search Console. You ask the assistants a fixed set of buyer questions and track the results. → [How to track AI visibility](https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/) ## Is GEO replacing SEO? No. GEO depends on SEO: an AI assistant that searches the web can only cite pages it can find. What changes is what you count. Add AI answers to your scoreboard instead of replacing the old one. ## AEO, AIO, LLMO: same idea, different names You will see **AEO** (answer engine optimization), **AIO** (AI optimization) and **LLMO** (large language model optimization). They all describe getting your content into AI-generated answers. We use GEO because it comes from the research that first measured it.[^geo] ## What to do first 1. Fix crawl access and indexing: [allow AI crawlers](https://geoasked.com/guides/allow-ai-crawlers/), set up [Search Console](https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/) and [Bing](https://geoasked.com/guides/bing-webmaster-tools-setup/). 2. Measure your baseline in five assistants. 3. Publish answer-first pages for the questions where competitors appear and you don’t. No. Google’s own guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and AI Overviews and AI Mode only use pages that are indexed in Google Search. GEO adds a goal and a way of measuring on top of SEO. ### Is AEO the same as GEO? Close enough in practice. AEO (answer engine optimization) emphasizes answer engines; GEO (generative engine optimization) emphasizes generative AI answers. The method and measurements are the same. ### Can I do GEO without doing SEO? Not really. If your pages aren’t crawlable and indexed, AI assistants that search the web can’t find them. Fix crawl access and indexing first. --- # llms.txt: What It Is and Does It Work? > What llms.txt is, how it differs from robots.txt and sitemaps, who actually reads it, and whether it is worth adding. Example file included. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/llms-txt/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - llms.txt is a 2024 proposal by Jeremy Howard: a Markdown file at your site root that gives AI a clean summary and links. - Google says Search ignores llms.txt. No major AI provider has said its search crawler reads it. - It is cheap to add and useful for agents that fetch it on purpose, but it is not a ranking factor. ## What llms.txt is **llms.txt** is a proposal published by Jeremy Howard on September 3, 2024: a Markdown file at `/llms.txt` that gives language models a clean summary of a site, with links to the pages that matter, optionally as `.md` versions.[^llmstxt] It is a proposal, not an official standard. A minimal file looks like this: ```text # Your Brand > One-paragraph summary of what you do and for whom. ## Key pages - [Pricing](https://your-site.com/pricing.md): plans and prices - [How it works](https://your-site.com/how-it-works.md): the product in 5 steps ## Optional - [Full text](https://your-site.com/llms-full.txt) ``` ## llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap | File | Job | Who reads it | |---|---|---| | `robots.txt` | Tells crawlers what they may fetch | Search and AI crawlers that respect it | | `sitemap.xml` | Lists your URLs for indexing | Google, Bing and other search engines | | `llms.txt` | Summarizes your site for language models | Agents and tools that fetch it on purpose | robots.txt and your sitemap decide whether you can be found. llms.txt does not replace either. ## Who actually reads it? - **Google:** Search ignores llms.txt files; adding one will neither help nor harm your visibility.[^g-geo] - **Others:** We found no primary statement from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity or Microsoft saying their search crawlers or answer engines read llms.txt. In June 2025 Google’s John Mueller was reported as saying no AI system currently uses it.[^mueller] So don’t expect llms.txt to get you recommended. Crawlable pages, indexing and good content do that. → [Allow AI crawlers](https://geoasked.com/guides/allow-ai-crawlers/) ## When it is worth adding - **Agents that fetch it deliberately.** Coding agents and AI tools that a user points at your site can read a clean Markdown map instead of parsing HTML. - **Documentation and playbooks.** If you publish something meant to be run by an agent, llms.txt is a natural index for it. - **It costs almost nothing.** One small text file. ## Our own example We publish [/llms.txt](https://geoasked.com/llms.txt), [/llms-full.txt](https://geoasked.com/llms-full.txt) and an agent playbook at [/agent.md](https://geoasked.com/agent.md). Each guide also has a clean `.md` version. We do it for agents that fetch these files on purpose, not because we expect it to change rankings. There is no evidence that it does. Google says adding llms.txt will neither help nor harm visibility in Google Search, and no major AI provider has said its crawlers use it for ranking or citations. ### Where do I put llms.txt? At the root of your site, for example https://your-site.com/llms.txt, served as plain text. ### What is llms-full.txt? A common companion file that puts the full text of your key pages into one file, so an agent can read everything in a single request. It is a convention, not part of a standard. --- # GEO Audit Checklist (2026) > A 23-point GEO audit checklist: crawl access, indexing, trust signals, answer-ready content, third-party presence and measurement, with a fix order. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/geo-audit-checklist/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - Audit in this order: crawl access, indexing, trust, answer-ready content, third-party presence, measurement. - Most early wins are boring: an unblocked crawler, a submitted sitemap, a page that answers the question in its first lines. - Score each section, fix the lowest one first, then re-measure your AI visibility with the same prompts. ## How to use this checklist Go section by section and tick what is true today. Each section links to the guide that fixes it. Run the full checklist once when you start and again after big site changes. In between, re-measure your AI visibility every 2–4 weeks with the same question set. ### Can an AI agent run this audit? Yes. Give your agent our playbook at /agent.md. It walks through the same checks and asks before changing anything. ### Do I need schema markup to pass? Not strictly. Google says structured data isn’t required for its AI features; Microsoft says schema helps its systems understand content. Treat it as helpful, not decisive. --- # How to See ChatGPT Traffic in Google Analytics 4 > Find visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot in GA4: the right report, a regex for all assistants, a custom channel and caveats. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/chatgpt-traffic-google-analytics/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - AI assistants that link to you usually show up in GA4 as referral traffic from their own domains, for example chatgpt.com. - Use Traffic acquisition with Session source, filter with one regex for all assistants, or build an “AI assistants” channel group. - Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and look like Direct. Treat the numbers as a floor, and pair them with your prompt baseline. ## Where AI visits show up When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Copilot link to your page and someone clicks, the visit usually arrives with the assistant’s domain as its source: `chatgpt.com`, `perplexity.ai`, `claude.ai`, `gemini.google.com`, `copilot.microsoft.com`. In GA4 that is referral traffic. You will also often see `utm_source=chatgpt.com` on ChatGPT links; that is observed behavior in analytics, not something OpenAI documents. ## 1. The quick check (2 min) 1. In GA4, open **Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition**.[^ga4] 2. Change the primary dimension to **Session source** (or Session source / medium). 3. Type `chatgpt` into the table search. Repeat for `perplexity`, `claude`, `gemini`, `copilot`. ## 2. All assistants at once (5 min) In **Explore**, create a free-form exploration with the dimensions *Session source* and *Landing page*, and add a filter on Session source that **matches regex**: ```text chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com ``` Now you can see which pages AI assistants send people to. Those pages are your proven answers; build around them. ## 3. A permanent “AI assistants” channel (5 min) Under **Admin → Data display → Channel groups**, copy the default channel group and add a channel called *AI assistants* with the same regex on Session source. Put it above *Referral* so those visits stop being mixed into it. ## 4. Mind the caveats - **Direct traffic.** Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and show up as Direct. Microsoft notes the same for its own AI channel.[^clarity] - **AI Overviews and AI Mode.** Google counts this traffic as normal Google Search traffic.[^g-ai] Read AI impressions in Search Console instead. → [Search Console setup](https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/) - **Small numbers.** In Microsoft Clarity’s study, AI referrals were under 1% of total traffic, but signed up at a higher rate than search traffic.[^clarity-study] Judge quality, not just volume. ## 5. Connect it to your baseline Analytics shows the visits AI assistants send. Your prompt baseline shows how often they mention you. Use both: if mentions rise but visits don’t, the answer names you without linking, so work on the page they should cite. → [Track AI visibility](https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/) ## Free alternative: Microsoft Clarity Clarity’s **AIPlatform** channel groups visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity for you, at no cost.[^clarity] [^ga4]: Google Analytics Help, [GA4 Traffic acquisition report](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/12923437). When the browser or app doesn’t pass a referrer, analytics can’t tell where the visit came from. Microsoft notes that hidden referrers might appear as Direct. So AI referral numbers are a minimum, not a total. ### Can I see AI Overviews traffic separately in GA4? No. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode as regular Google Search traffic. Use Search Console’s Generative AI report for AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions. ### Is there a free alternative to GA4 for this? Microsoft Clarity has a built-in AIPlatform channel that groups visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. --- # Why Isn’t My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT? > Seven reasons your business doesn’t show up in ChatGPT, how to check each one in minutes, and the order to fix them in. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/not-showing-up-in-chatgpt/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - ChatGPT search builds answers from third-party search providers and its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. If either can’t find or read you, you won’t be named. - Check in this order: how you tested, crawler access, indexing, readable HTML, consistent business info, third-party mentions, a page that answers the question. - Fix the first failing check, then re-test with the same prompts in fresh chats. ## How ChatGPT picks what to recommend When ChatGPT searches the web, it rewrites the question into targeted queries, sends them to third-party search providers, and ranks the results using multiple factors; placement is not guaranteed.[^search-help] Separately, OpenAI’s **OAI-SearchBot** crawls sites so they can appear in ChatGPT search; sites that block it aren’t shown in ChatGPT search answers.[^oai-bots] So “not showing up” means one of two things: ChatGPT can’t find or read you, or it finds better answers elsewhere. The seven checks below cover both. ## 1. Did you test the right way? Ask buyer questions, not your brand name, in a **fresh chat**, and use several of them. One answer proves little; 15–25 questions show a pattern. → [Track AI visibility](https://geoasked.com/guides/track-ai-visibility/) ## 2. Are you blocking OAI-SearchBot? Open `your-site.com/robots.txt`. If `OAI-SearchBot` (or `*`) is disallowed, ChatGPT search can’t show you. Also check your CDN or firewall: OpenAI warns that Cloudflare, WAFs and CAPTCHAs can return 403 to its crawlers.[^oai-guide] → [Allow AI crawlers](https://geoasked.com/guides/allow-ai-crawlers/) ## 3. Are you indexed? If search engines don’t have your pages, the providers ChatGPT queries can’t return them. Check Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; OpenAI links Microsoft’s privacy statement among its search providers.[^search-help] → [Bing setup](https://geoasked.com/guides/bing-webmaster-tools-setup/) · [Search Console setup](https://geoasked.com/guides/google-search-console-setup/) ## 4. Can crawlers read your content? Most AI crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot, don’t run JavaScript.[^vercel] If your text only appears after scripts run, they see an empty page. Open your page with JavaScript turned off: what’s left is what they read. ## 5. Is your business information consistent? Use the same business name, category, location and contact details on your site and your listings, and have an About page that says who you are. Mixed signals make it harder for any system to connect mentions to you. ## 6. Do others mention you? Assistants often cite comparison articles, reviews and forums. In Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with visibility in Google’s AI Overviews (0.664), though correlation is not causation.[^ahrefs-brand] Find the pages ChatGPT cites for your category and get honestly listed on them. Google warns that chasing inauthentic mentions doesn’t help.[^g-geo] ## 7. Do you have a page that answers the question? If the buyer asks “best accounting software for freelancers” and you have no page about that, someone else’s page gets cited. Write one answer-first page per priority question, with numbers and sources. → [How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business](https://geoasked.com/guides/get-recommended-by-chatgpt/) ## Fix order | Failing check | Typical fix | Time | |---|---|---| | Testing | Build a 15–25 question baseline | 1 hour | | Crawler blocked | Edit robots.txt, allow crawlers in Cloudflare/WAF | 15 min | | Not indexed | Search Console + Bing, sitemap, IndexNow | 30 min | | Unreadable HTML | Server-render the main text | Varies | | Inconsistent info | Align name, address and contacts | 1 hour | | No mentions | Honest listings on the most-cited pages | Weeks | | No answer page | One answer-first page per question | 1–2 hours each | [^search-help]: OpenAI Help Center, [Searching the web with ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt), October 2026. OpenAI says ChatGPT rewrites a question into targeted searches, sends them to third-party search providers and ranks results using multiple factors. Placement is not guaranteed. Pages must be reachable by OAI-SearchBot to be shown in ChatGPT search. ### ChatGPT mentions my competitor but not me. Why? Usually because the pages ChatGPT cites (comparison lists, reviews, forums) mention them and not you, or because they have a page that answers the exact question and you don’t. Your baseline shows which one it is. ### How long after fixing will I show up? Crawling and indexing take days to weeks, and answers vary between sessions. Re-test every 2–4 weeks with the same prompts and look at the totals. --- # ChatGPT Ads vs Organic Recommendations > Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT? How ChatGPT ads work, who sees them, whether they affect answers, and when ads or GEO are the better bet. Source: https://geoasked.com/guides/chatgpt-ads-vs-organic/ · Updated: 2026-10-26 · GEO Asked ## In short - You can advertise in ChatGPT, but ads are labeled, shown separately, and OpenAI says they don’t influence the answers. - As of October 21, 2026, ChatGPT Ads run in 89 countries and only on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and Enterprise are ad-free. - Ads buy attention now; GEO earns a place inside the answer. Measure both separately. ## Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT? Yes, with ads, but not inside the answer. OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT’s answers, and that **advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides**.[^ads-89] So an ad can put you next to the conversation; it can’t make ChatGPT recommend you. ## How ChatGPT ads work - **Who sees them:** only users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise are ad-free.[^ads-89] - **Where:** as of October 21, 2026, in 89 countries; over 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns.[^ads-89] Self-service buying through Ads Manager opened across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa on August 31, 2026.[^ads-1b] Self-service availability is listed country by country on OpenAI’s Ads Manager Availability page; the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a listed country.[^ads-avail] - **Targeting:** the ads system uses the context of the current conversation; depending on the country and the user’s settings, it may also use broader ChatGPT context.
